Livingston is a small city in northern Merced County, along Highway 99 near the Merced River. Merced County’s animal ordinance requires dogs off their owner’s property to be on a leash no longer than 8 feet, so for most local dogs the daily neighborhood walk is the main outing. A dog that walks well on leash makes that routine much easier for the whole household. Big Valley Dog Training is about 10 minutes north in Delhi, which keeps training close and convenient for Livingston families.
The daily walk is where most habits form, good or bad. These are the problems Livingston dog owners mention most:
Zigzagging and pulling. Dogs that cross back and forth or drag ahead make a short walk tiring.
Stopping at every scent. Constant sniffing breaks up the walk and can turn into a tug of war.
Reacting to dogs behind fences. Barking or lunging at fenced dogs is one of the most common complaints we hear.
Many owners have already tried new harnesses or online videos. What usually helps most is a trainer watching the dog and owner together and adjusting small details, like hand position and the timing of rewards.
That kind of coaching is built into our obedience classes for dogs 7 months and up. With no more than 5 dogs, a trainer has time to step in when someone gets stuck. Classes meet one evening a week for eight weeks and cover heeling, sit, down and recall.
When the leash goes tight, stop and wait for the dog to look back or step toward you, then continue. It feels slow the first few times. Stick with it, though, because it teaches the dog that pulling stops the walk instead of speeding it up.
Dogs that bark at fences or have gone after other dogs do best with one-on-one dog training, which begins with an evaluation. Private sessions are also where puppies start, with crate training, potty training and first behaviors.
With board and train for Livingston dogs, each dog lives and trains with us for 6 to 8 weeks and learns heeling, recall and a rug command for settling on a mat. Follow-up classes help owners maintain the results.
We start with a conversation about your dog and your routine. Owners are involved in every program, and each one ends with clear steps for keeping the training going on your own neighborhood walks.
We explain why each step matters, not only what to do. Our program was built by Joel Monroe, a former school teacher with more than 30 years around dogs. Meet our trainers.
