Dog Training in Turlock, CA

Turlock is one of the larger cities in Stanislaus County, with neighborhoods, schools and parks spread across town. Dog owners here have two fenced dog parks to choose from, Quaile Rand Norton Park and Swanson-Centennial Park, along with plenty of sidewalks and walking paths. With that many dogs and people sharing public space, good manners make every outing easier. Big Valley Dog Training is about 10 minutes south in Delhi, and we offer dog training for families in Turlock who want a dog that is calm, responsive and easy to bring along.

Common Dog Training Challenges in Turlock

Most of what Turlock dog owners ask us about shows up out in public, at the park or on a busy path. These are the ones we hear about most:

Pulling on the leash. A walking path is hard to enjoy when a dog drags its owner from one smell to the next.

Trouble at the dog park gate. Some dogs get overexcited while waiting to go in, which can make the entrance tense for everyone.

Unreliable recall. A dog that won’t come when called makes it hard to leave the park, or to trust the dog anywhere off leash.

Reactivity. Some dogs bark or lunge when another dog gets close. For these dogs, a busy dog park is usually not the right place to start.

How Big Valley Dog Training Can Help

Our eight-week Basic Obedience Course is for dogs 7 months and older. Classes meet one evening a week for about an hour, with no more than 5 dogs, and cover recall, heeling, sit and down around other dogs and people. The course ends with an off-leash final.

For dogs that react to other dogs, private training for reactive dogs is the better first step. Every private client starts with an evaluation and goes home with homework built for that dog. Puppies under 7 months also begin with private sessions covering crate training, potty training, feeding and first behaviors.

For busy households, our board and train program keeps a dog with us for 6 to 8 weeks. Dogs learn the full obedience course plus a rug command, and follow-up classes show owners how to keep the training working at home.

What to Expect

We start by getting to know your dog and what you’d like to change. Then we’ll recommend a class, private sessions or board and train, whichever fits best. Owners take part in every program, because the training only holds up if the people at home know how to use it. Follow-up support helps keep skills sharp after the program ends.

Why Turlock Owners Choose Us

We work with every breed, size, age and temperament, and we coach owners as closely as we train dogs. Our program was built by Joel Monroe, a former school teacher and active dog sport judge. You can meet our trainers on the homepage.
